Henk van Twillert & Tjako van Schie

Henk van Twillert completed his musical education at the Sweelinck Academy of Music in Amsterdam under supervsion of Ed Boogaard. He is one of the leading baritone-saxophone players in Europe and inspired several composers to write music for this instrument: Chiel Meyering, Gijs van Dijk, Joao Pedro Oliveira, Carlos Marques en Anke Brouwer, all with contemporary music. Today we can hear Henk van Twillert on 15 CD’s and one of his best, a peak in his career was issued in 2009: “The Cello Suites of Johan Sebastian Bach”, played on baritonsaxophone. In his musical repertoire, which goes from Bach to Jazz, Henk van Twillert is a many sided musician with a versatile mind. Henk van Twillert is also a “world citizen”: born in the Netherlands, living in Porto , Portugal ,where he is a teacher at the Academy of music and conductor of the “Orquestra de Saxofones Portugesa.”. Henk is still a teacher at the Academy of Music in Amsterdam and also connected to the famous “La Sistema” in Caracas as a guest teacher. At this moment he works and lives in New York City, working on his Masters and at the same time giving masterclasses and concerts with Gary Smulyan on baritonsaxophone, playing Bach.

Tjako van Schie was born in 1961 and starting at the age of 6 with pianolessons, van Schie accomplished his study at the Academy of Music in Amsterdam under the guidance of Ben Smits. Thereafter he went to New York City to follow masterclasses with the famous pianist Jacob Lateiner. Tjako van Schie made his first CD in 1991 with the “Goldbergvariations “ of J.S. Bach. Many positive reviews of that CD brought him to the important concertpodia in the Netherlands and abroad. In 1998 he produced a second CD with the theme “Water”.

Since 1987 is Tjako connected as a teacher to the Academy of Music in Amsterdam and since 2009 guest teacher at the Academy in Porto. He made a successful tour in China 2001 and performed also for the Chinese National Broadcast Company. In the Netherlands and in Porto he gave concerts with a special arrangement of the piano concert of Schumann for piano and saxophone orchestra. Tjako is the regular companion of Henk van Twillert, and they are presently working on a CD with classical and world music together.
